IP Guides built with Bynder's CX User Communities

Background

Riot Games is the creative force behind iconic video games like League of Legends, Valorant, and the Emmy-winning Netflix series, Arcane. As Riot’s universe expanded across games, music, esports, and TV, so did the challenge of maintaining consistent, immersive storytelling across teams, partners, and entertainment mediums.

To unify its growing intellectual property (IP) library and align teams around a single source of truth, Riot brought on Bynder—known internally as “Ritopedia.” Operating as a de facto knowledge base, Bynder has been configured to centralize everything from character bios and brand guidelines to faction histories and voiceover samples from across the Riot universe.

Single source of truth for 5,000+ pages of lore and creative assets

“We realized our biggest IP challenge wasn’t a lack of content, it was discoverability. Bynder gave us a way to bring thousands of pieces of lore, voice lines, and creative nuance into one place, in a way that actually makes sense for the people using it every day.”
— Ricci Ramos, Technical Program Manager at Riot Games

Why Riot Games is a winner

Riot Games stood out for its ingenious application of Bynder’s capabilities, transforming its DAM into a storytelling engine powering Riot’s transmedia universe. With a customized IP-first taxonomy, Ritopedia offers an inspiring use case on what’s possible when a DAM is used as an immersive storytelling and knowledge-sharing hub.

Riot’s collaboration with Bynder partner MOJO brought 150+ interactive, visually rich IP guides to life using Bynder’s CX for User Community. These guides offer Rioters a dynamic, searchable, and persona-tailored foundation powering consistent content experiences across every medium.

Riot’s use case is a masterclass in DAM-powered brand storytelling that sets a new benchmark for entertainment brands.

What the judges say

“We know Riot as a creative storyteller, but we don't often think about the intricate IP management and delivery system needed to make its media come to life. I was particularly impressed by how Riot built rich IP guides using CX User Communities and how both internal stakeholders and partners came to rely on these guides for creative inspiration.”
— Alexandra Lingard, Principal, Strategic Resources Group, THL

How they did it

The challenge

As Riot scaled into new formats and markets, it became clear that traditional content repositories and static documentation couldn’t keep up. Teams spent too much time searching for up-to-date lore and creative assets across siloed systems. And without a unified IP hub, it was becoming increasingly difficult to protect creative integrity, enforce storytelling consistency, and bring new creatives up to speed.

The solution

Riot teamed up with strategic partner MOJO to implement Bynder in a way that reflected how Rioters think and work. Built around a custom IP taxonomy, “Ritopedia” organizes assets by character, faction, timeline, and use case, making it easy for creators to find what they need based on narrative context, not just file type or project.

Riot used CX for User Community to produce over 150 interactive IP guides. These guides act as living references, walking teams through character arcs, narrative tone, world-building rules, and usage dos and don’ts. They’re as much educational tools as they are sources of creative inspiration, helping teams maintain coherence across everything from in-game content and esports to global brand campaigns.

“We’ve built Ritopedia with a deep understanding of our users at its core. It’s not just a utility, it’s a home for our stories, designed to inspire and equip everyone who contributes to Riot’s universe.”
— Ricci Ramos, Technical Program Manager at Riot Games

By mapping the needs of different user personas—developers, marketers, writers, partners—Riot was able to deliver curated, role-specific content experiences to help everyone do their jobs effectively.

The impact

Ritopedia has become Riot’s definitive IP hub, centralizing creative knowledge and scaling its content output without sacrificing quality. Key results include:

  • $2M+ annual cost savings: Research time is reduced to focus time and resources on more creative work
  • 25% faster content discovery: Lore, character details, and visual references are now easily searchable and accessible from one centralized platform
  • 150+ IP guides: Mobilizing teams with context-specific storytelling resources
  • Stronger brand consistency: Accurate, on-brand content experiences across all media, from games and esports to TV and merchandise
  • Closer collaboration: Multiple teams now share a single, trusted system of record
Bynder has become a critical enabler of Riot’s mission to deliver immersive, consistent storytelling across our portfolio. It empowers our teams to access trusted IP assets quickly, reduces time spent on research, and centralizes our creative universe in one scalable, user-friendly platform.”
— Ricci Ramos, Technical Program Manager at Riot Games

Looking ahead

What started as a focused IP management initiative has scaled into one of Riot’s most adopted platforms. With growing internal demand, Ritopedia is now expanding its Bynder solution to ingest all game product assets, develop cross-product usage guides, and fully integrate voice content.

Riot’s ultimate goal is to build an ever-evolving content ecosystem that preserves the integrity of its IP and inspires its progression, fueling the next generation of storytelling for fans worldwide.
