Sky NZ’s DAM journey

The challenge

Before Bynder, Sky NZ steadily accumulated assets across multiple servers and siloed platforms, resulting in a disorganized maze of unstructured folders with minimal metadata and significant duplication. This not only slowed down workflows and publishing but also hindered content discoverability, governance, and the ability to deliver consistent customer experiences.

As Sky’s content library grew, so did the need for a centralized, metadata-driven DAM that could serve as the engine fueling a highly automated, closed-loop content delivery network.

The solution

Recognizing Bynder’s potential, Andrew implemented a hierarchical, tailored taxonomy aligned to Sky’s content types—spanning movies, events, shows, seasons, and episodes. He collaborated with developers to build custom API integrations between Bynder and internal systems, enabling automated metadata enrichment and image publishing to Sky’s digital storefronts.

To increase user adoption, Andrew developed custom training resources, including detailed user guides and tutorial videos, that appealed to both technical developers and business users, boosting engagement and confidence in the platform.

The impact

Andrew’s efforts have set a new benchmark for what a DAM can do for an entertainment company. Today, Sky’s DAM serves as the system of record for nearly a million assets, powering exceptional content experiences for hundreds of thousands of Sky customers.

  • 943,000+ assets now live in Bynder, each enriched with structured, searchable metadata
  • Automated publishing of assets via an API integration with Sky’s internal systems, accelerating time-to-market
  • Reduced costs by decommissioning redundant legacy systems
  • Replaced time-intensive manual workflows through automation and integration for operational efficiency
  • Improved content governance and auditability, strengthening IP protection and compliance

Looking ahead

As Sky continues to evolve as a transmedia leader, Andrew remains focused on getting even more value from Bynder. Andrew is currently focused on developing an automated asset-cleaning system for expired or out-of-license content to maintain a quality user experience, improve IP governance, and future-proof the platform for continued business growth.

From day one, Bynder has supported and guided us on our DAM journey. Thanks to many Byndies, Sky has an amazingly efficient and useful tool in our technology stack.”
